Big congratulations to Ashburn’s own Brandon Diaz, who just got a golden ticket to Hollywood on the new “American Idol.” The 21-year-old Briar Woods High School graduate performed on Monday night’s show and wowed the judges with his falsetto.

Diaz, who said he owed his musical talent to his father, an immigrant from Cuba and a skilled vocalist. In an interview with WTOP, Diaz said he used to play gigs around Virginia, including at wineries and the Potbelly in Ashburn.

His parents and sister accompanied him to NYC for the show’s taping. During his audition, the young singer performed Allen Stone’s “Unaware.”

After 15 seasons on Fox, “American Idol” was cancelled. But ABC has now picked the franchise up and re-launched it. Host Ryan Seacrest is back and the judges are performers Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.
