Drivers on 267 near Leesburg have seen the huge construction project rising between the roadway and the Leesburg airport. Of course, that’s the new Compass Creek project finally “going vertical” as the first buildings begin to take shape. (See our previous report on Compass Creek here.)
Two big anchor projects are leading the way — the ION Training Center and the new Walmart location.
Site work has been underway on the ION Training Center for several months and now the foundation is being poured. The center will be a 100,000 s.f. ice arena — the largest in Virginia — offering hockey and figure skating programs, ice shows, tournaments, competitions and more. ION CEO Mitra Setayesh told The Burn that the current planned opening is May 2019, but they are pushing hard for an April opening, if possible.
Meanwhile, the walls are up at the new Walmart Supercenter that will replace the current location on Edwards Ferry Road. We haven’t heard an official opening date yet, but folks at the Leesburg store are telling customers they are aiming for a January 2019 opening, going so far as to say they will need to double up their holiday hiring — needing staff to be operating the original store while stocking and preparing the new store.
Other plans for Compass Creek include additional stores, new restaurants, a hotel and tons of office space.
So the current Walmart is closing & being replaced by the new one? I don’t care for the current one, but it could serve the north side of Lburg with the new one serving the south side.
As a “north sider”, I am not going to miss the old Leesburg Walmart, I’ll drive the extra five minutes to the “south side” Walmart.
The shopping center that the “old” Walmart is in is an eyesore and needs to be refreshed or leveled and replaced.
