New Korean BBQ restaurant signs deal in Sterling

A couple of years ago, if you wanted real Korean barbecue — the kind where you cook food right at your own table — local residents had to head to places like Sō Korean BBQ and Honey Pig BBQ over in Fairfax. But no longer.

The latest KBBQ to announce it’s coming to Loudoun County is Kiwa Korean Grill, a new full-service restaurant from the same folks who own the Matsui Japanese Sushi Ramen restaurant in Alexandria and also Puzukan Korean BBQ in Alexandria.

Kiwa is coming to the Cascades Overlook center in Sterling. That’s the development anchored by a Harris Teeter supermarket and home to Chuy’s Tex-Mex restaurant, Burton’s Grill & Bar, Fireworks Pizza, Urbano Modern Italian, the fast-casual Indian restaurant Choolaah and several other eateries.

Kiwa Korean Grill will be taking over the 4,600 s.f. space vacated by Marumen, a ramen restaurant that closed back in August 2020. The spot is next door to Burton’s, overlooking the center’s central plaza.

This is at least the second Korean BBQ restaurant to set up shop in Loudoun County, after years without one. Gogi 92 Korean BBQ opened in June 2021 in the Village at Leesburg center off Route 7 at Crosstrail Boulevard.

No official word yet on when the new Kiwa Korean Grill will open in Sterling — the deal was just finalized Monday, but we are told they are hoping to start welcoming guests by the end of the year.
