Exclusive: Famed chef Peter Chang bringing casual Chinese to Herndon

Big news on the local culinary scene — famed DC-area chef Peter Chang is bringing his Mama Chang restaurant concept to Herndon.

It will be coming to the Arrowbrook Center just off of Centreville Road. The Burn has learned that Chang has signed for a 3,500 s.f. space for his new restaurant.

Chang is widely known for owning and operating a dozen or so restaurants in the region, including seven locations under the Peter Chang brand, as well as Chang Chang in DC, Q by Peter Chang in Bethesda, and NiHao in Baltimore.

His first Mama Chang — a comfort food brand inspired by the women in his life — opened in Fairfax in 2019. Now he is expanding with this new location in Herndon.

The Mama Chang website says the restaurant “celebrates the extensive culinary contributions of the Chang women including Peter’s grandmother, mother, wife and celebrated chef Lisa Chang, and daughter Lydia Chang.”

It describes the menu as having “a heavy emphasis on Hunan, Szechuan, Hubei, and home-style Chinese cooking and recipes, many of which have remained in the Chang family for generations.”

Some of the dishes on the menu include the classic Peking Duck, Braised Pork Belly & Tea Egg, and something called Hot & Numbing Beef Stone Pot. You can see the Mama Chang menu at the bottom of this story.

Meanwhile, this latest news just adds to the impressive dining scene developing at Arrowbrook. Besides Mama Chang, the center will also have an Ornery Beer Public House, a Paris Baguette, as well as an Indian grocery store called Hello2India.

Arrowbrook is being represented by Dan Patrizio of Paraclete Realty. We’re told the center is roughly 80 percent leased and additional tenants could be announced soon.
