Virginia is undoubtedly horse country with an estimated 215,000 horses strolling the fields and farms of the commonwealth. That’s why it’s the perfect venue for the International Gold Cup, one of the largest steeplechase events in the country. The big day is Saturday, October 28.
“The fall International Gold Cup has become the premier fall event in the state,” said Al Griffin, co-chairman of the Virginia Gold Cup Association. “It is just breathtaking to be there in person where you can hear the hoofbeats and see the horses and jockeys as well as the spectacular fall foliage around the area.”
The International Gold Cup is held every October. This year’s event is the 86th running of the race. Initially created as a venue for international participants, the race includes many trainers and jockeys from overseas who train here in the U.S. The event still awards its highly coveted King of Spain annual trophy each year.
Known for its quality racing, spectacular scenery and lavish tailgating, the event attracts 45,000 spectators annually to the race course and rolling fields at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. That’s just about 15 minutes from Middleburg and about 40 minutes from Leesburg. in the heart of Virginia Horse Country.
New this year is an elevated experience called the 1922 Club. It’s a special VIP ticket that provides guests with special seats with great views of the race, along with food and drink.
