Petco planning new location in Leesburg

It looks like the Petco pet supply store in Leesburg is getting ready to make a move. The new spot is just a few hundred feet away as the crow flies from its current location, but in a whole different shopping center.

Petco is slated to take a 12,000+ s.f. space in the Battlefield Shopping Center off Edwards Ferry Road NE. That’s the same shopping center with the Dick’s Sporting Goods store and the Total Wine & More store.

It looks like three vacant spaces are going to be combined to make way for the new pet store. This includes the former Baer’s Mattress Den (which moved to Ashburn) and the former McCormick Paints (which moved to East Market Street in Leesburg).

Currently, the Petco in Leesburg is located in the Fort Evans Plaza shopping center. That’s near the Home Depot and Hobby Lobby on Fort Evans Road NE. The two shopping centers back up to each other.

To be clear — there’s no official announcement yet that the Fort Evans location is moving to the Battlefield Shopping Center, but there is zero chance they are going to operate two stores so close together.

It’s also not surprising that Petco would want to get into the Battlefield Shopping Center. It was already considered a prime property — with tenants such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Total Wine & More, Chipotle, and Starbucks.

But the recent news that a Sprouts Farmers Market grocery store, a Boot Barn apparel store, and a Wingstop restaurant are all moving into the center have made it one of Leesburg’s hottest retail centers.
