New Dulles mall owner exploring carnivals, farmers markets

We’ve got to give the new owner of the Dulles Town Center credit — he is definitely looking for new ways to revive the struggling mall. The latest move — possibly hosting carnivals, farmers markets, and other similar events on the property.

Srinivas Chavali bought Loudoun’s largest indoor shopping mall last year. Since that time, plans were announced for a large bowling and billiards center to open in the DTC and a large furniture store opened in one of the vacant department store spaces.

A new sushi restaurant recently opened in the mall as well and plans have been announced for a restaurant and dance club to take over one of the vacant buildings around the mall’s perimeter.

And that’s not even counting the proposal to build upwards of 1,000 new residential units in a ring surrounding the mall.

Now, the mall’s leadership team has requested to meet with Loudoun County officials to discuss plans to host community events such as carnivals and farmers markets in the vast parking lots that surround the shopping center.

The additional activities also extend to inside the mall. The Dulles Town Center is getting ready to host a comic book convention later this month, including celebrity panels and costume contests.

The Super Nova Comic Con is scheduled for Saturday, June 29th and Sunday, June 30th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

The Burn has watched the Dulles Town Center for years now — and much of our reporting has been about big plans that never came to fruition and multiple stores leaving the mall.

But based on the amount of activity, something different seems to be happening now. At the very least, Chavali is thinking outside the proverbial box and looking for ways to bring new life to the center.
