It was a picture perfect morning today — Monday, October 21 — as local leaders gathered on the shores of the Beaverdam Reservoir to officially open Loudoun’s newest park.
The sun was shining, the waters of the reservoir were smooth, and the trees were aglow in autumn oranges, reds and yellows at the aptly named Reservoir Park.
Speeches were given and then a ceremonial ribbon was cut inaugurating the park.
The project has been in the works for years — The Burn first reported on the park eight years ago in 2016.
The goal — to create a recreational destination that takes advantage of the reservoir’s beauty and proximity to much of Loudoun’s population — while also being ecologically friendly in order to preserve the quality of the water which is a backup supply of drinking water for county residents.
Reservoir Park is a joint project between Loudoun Water — which manages the reservoir — and NOVA Parks — which oversees several dozen parks in the region.
There are walking and biking paths, picnic pavilions, kayak rentals, a boat launch (non-gas boats only), and a facility for area rowing teams to practice.
