Gingerbread dreams come to life at Winter Lights Walk in Purcellville

There are plenty of reasons to shower one another with gifts at this time of year, but the trend of giving meaningful experiences has been gaining popularity and a visit to seasonal light displays fit the bill.

Sharing time together amidst colorful lights is heart-warming, but it can also be costly. The Winter Lights Walk at Franklin Park in Purcellville is one event that will light up your winter nights without bursting your budget.

The free event is held nightly from December 9  to December 22 between 6 and 8 p.m. The colorful displays are not holiday themed, but rather create a sweet adventure of gingerbread houses, snowmen, lollipops and other whimsical light features.

“It’s so nice to be able to enjoy an event that doesn’t empty my wallet,” said one visitor. “We met several families here with all our kids and just enjoyed being together.”

Visitors begin in the art gallery filled with artwork from Loudoun artists and an impressive display of more than 40 painted 2-foot by 2-foot gingerbread houses.

Outside, follow the mostly paved path through the lighted candy cane tunnel, gingerbread house and the penguin playground. Stop and admire the butterfly forest and snap a photo beside our train car. Tiptoe through our musical pathway and try to find the owl hiding in the trees. March with our toy soldiers and gallop past our Victorian sleigh.

There are companion events that can be enjoyed for a nominal fee, including two Family Nights with special activities such as crafts, a hot chocolate bar, marshmallow roasting over a campfire and an outdoor classic animated film “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland” as well as the Winter Lights Walk experience.
