Leesburg’s Ion ice skating center to become events hall

The Ion International Training Center in Leesburg today announced that it was switching gears and getting rid of the facility’s two ice skating rinks. In its place, the owners plan to create a conference center and performing arts venue.

The news comes after months of swirling rumors and reports of problems at the skating center on Compass Creek Parkway – and talk that change was coming soon.

The press release sent to local media this afternoon repeatedly addressed the turmoil.

“Over the past few months, there have been rumors and speculation about what’s next for Ion,” it stated. “While we understand that change can be unsettling, it is disheartening to see misinformation and negativity take root in a space where our only goal has been to do what is best for our community.”

“Our team is made up of individuals who have dedicated themselves to making this venue something special,” it continued. “Personal attacks, negativity, and misinformation do not serve our community —they only create unnecessary division.”

The new plans envision a space that can be used for musical performances, corporate events, conventions, sporting events, trade shows, even weddings and private dinners.

The ice rink has already hosted special events like concerts with performers such as Starship and Flo Rida, although views were sometimes obstructed somewhat by the protective glass barrier that surrounded the hockey rinks.

The move away from an ice center also leaves hundreds of children who train there or play ice hockey there without a home rink. At least two area competitive and development hockey teams operate out of Ion.

The press release did not include any details on how the transformation to a convention center and arts hall would be financed.
