(Updated 3-19-25) It’s the news that many folks have been waiting years to hear — work has officially started on the huge Northern Virginia Science Center that is coming to Loudoun County.

“Balfour Beatty announces the start of construction on the Northern Virginia Science Center in Dulles, Virginia,” read an announcement from the general contractor overseeing the build.

“Once complete, the project will fulfill the region’s long-held vision for a world class, interactive and innovative science center which is expected to serve over 300,000 visitors of all ages each year,” it continued.

As long time readers know, the project is planned for the Kincora development off Russell Branch Parkway — a spot near the confluence of Route 7 and State Road 28.

When completed, the science museum will have five main exhibition halls.

  • FLOW will examine the flow of matter, energy, and information.
  • HELIOS will explore our relationship with the solar system and space.
  • WONDER will be all about hands-on STEM learning.
  • HUMAN will look at who we are, how we work, and how we connect with the world.
  • HABITAT will showcase how human activity is linked to the natural environment.

The Northern Virginia Science Center is coming from the same folks who operate the Children’s Science Center over at the Fair Oaks Mall.

The team there has been raising funds for years now and bringing on corporate sponsors in order to bring the new center to life — and now — work is finally underway.

Construction on the 70,000 s.f. science center is expected to be completed sometime in late 2026, but the opening won’t likely happen until late 2027.
