Wonder food hall brand expanding to Reston

An interesting new food hall-type restaurant is moving aggressively into the greater DC market – and they have a Reston location in the works.

The Washington Business Journal today reported that the restaurant concept Wonder is planning seven locations in the region, including one in Reston.

The Burn was able to confirm the Reston news via building permits. The spot under consideration is in the Plaza America shopping center off Sunset Hills Road.

Wonder would be taking the space previously occupied by the recently closed Maizal Latin American street food restaurant.

Wonder currently has more than 60 locations open or in the works in six New England and Mid-Atlantic states – from Connecticut and Rhode Island down through New York and New Jersey to Delaware and Pennsylvania.

If we understand the concept properly, Wonder partners with famous national chefs to bring their iconic dishes into one kitchen under one roof. We’re talking people like Bobby Flay and José Andrés.

The Wonder food hall acts as a “ghost kitchen” of sorts – allowing customers to order from a dozen or more different restaurants in a single order.

Some of the restaurants listed on the Wonder website include the Detroit Brick Pizza Co., Tejas Barbecue, Maydan Mediterranean cuisine, Mr. D’s Fried Chicken, Hanu Poke, a Kin House Chinese eatery, and Bario Café serving Mexican dishes.

Home and office delivery seems to be the focus – they tout a delivery time averaging under 35 minutes – although many of the Wonder locations have dining rooms as well.

Right now, the Wonder in Reston is just in the permitting stage, but once open, folks in western Fairfax County will have an intriguing new dining option.
