Loudoun County Transit and Commuter Services is launching a Transit Travel Training Program.
Beginning in June 2025, the free, hands-on program will provide personalized and group instruction on how to plan trips, read schedules, purchase SmarTrip cards, board buses, transfer between routes and practice safe travel habits.
Participants will also receive practical tips for navigating common transit scenarios, such as crowded buses or service changes.
Loudoun County’s Travel Training Program is designed to educate interested members of the community on how to travel safely and independently using public transportation.
This includes county residents, new and existing transit bus riders, businesses interested in sharing information with their employees, and organizations serving, seniors, limited English proficiency residents and people with disabilities.
The launch of the program follows approval by the Board of Supervisors in 2024 to use funding from the American Rescue Plan Act for development and implementation of the program.
Using a variety of tools, participants in the program will learn travel skills they can apply to their daily travel routine or when public transit is needed for travel. Through a combination of classroom and on-the-bus training, participants will learn how to:
- Plan trips on transit effectively.
- Safely get on and off of transit.
- Take a bicycle with them on transit.
- Navigate the Metrorail system
- Use different tools to pay for transit where applicable.
Through travel training, participants will gain the necessary skills to build independence and boost confidence while helping to improve access to jobs, medical care and other vital services throughout Loudoun County and the surrounding areas.
Loudoun County Transit will start scheduling training sessions for the Travel Training Program in June 2025. To schedule a Travel Training session, complete the interest form found online at loudoun.gov/TransitTraining. Trainings can be conducted individually or in group settings.
