Some big changes coming for drivers in the Ashburn area. Two street names along a stretch of well-known roadway are going away and a busy intersection will be converted into a traffic circle.
The first thing that is happening – Broadlands Boulevard is going to be extended all the way to the intersection with Waxpool Road.
Currently, Broadlands Boulevards turns into Shellhorn Road for a few blocks and then turns into Faulkner Parkway.
This is especially awkward because there is another stretch of Shellhorn Road down by the Shops at Ryan Park and Loudoun Station that is not connected to the northern stretch of Shellhorn.
In the next few weeks, this orphaned stretch of Shellhorn will be renamed Broadlands Boulevard. And the Faulkner Parkway name will disappear and be replaced by Broadlands Boulevard as well.
Changes to street signs along the route are expected to be completed by the start of August.
The other change for drivers in this area will be the addition of a traffic circle – sometimes called a roundabout – at the intersection of the newly-extended Broadlands Boulevard where it meets Waxpool Road.
Currently, this intersection is only governed by a stop sign and it can get quite congested – especially during peak travel times. The traffic circle will hopefully eliminate some of the backups that can form here.
The work on the new traffic circle is scheduled to start later this summer. The two images below show the current map and then the future map.
