Shipley Do-Nuts planning first Northern Virginia store

It looks like Shipley Do-Nuts is coming into the Northern Virginia market with a new location headed to Vienna.

The Burn has learned that a Shipley’s is in the works for a corner unit at 256 Maple Avenue East. That’s next door to a Smoothie King and a Sweet Leaf Cafe.

If you are not familiar, Shipley’s is an iconic doughnut shop chain based in Texas that got its start in 1936.

The restaurant specializes in a variety of doughnuts and kolaches – another popular Texas treat – made fresh each day.

There are more than 300 Shipley locations, mostly in the southern United States.

A few years ago, the brand started inching in our direction. Several locations have opened in Maryland near DC and the first Virginia location opened last month in Lynchburg. Now, they are headed into NoVa.

For folks who say there seems to be a Dunkin’ Donuts on every corner, this could be some competition. If we could just get Tim Horton’s, we would have a real “sweet” fight on our hands.

No word yet on when the new Vienna Shipley’s intends to open, nor if they have selected other future locations in NoVa. We’ve got a message into to their HQ for more details.
