Some alarming news for fans of drive-in movie theaters. One of the last such theaters in Virginia – and perhaps the closest one to many of us here in Northern Virginia – is skating on thin ice.
The Family Drive-In in Stephens City, just south of Winchester, has confirmed that the family that owns the theater property have put it on the market.
That being said – there is reportedly no sale pending, but it only takes one eager buyer and that could change quickly.
“We had hoped to be able to purchase the property and keep the drive in around for many generations to come,” the theater’s team posted on social media, before going on to discuss the difficult finances.
“We have had people reach out about the idea of crowdfunding the purchase, as well as some businesses that are interesting in doing some sponsorships,” they wrote. “But it all just seems so impossible right now and there is a real sense of defeat at the moment.”
