Report: IKEA exploring new store in Chantilly

It sounds like the international furniture store brand IKEA is considering a new store in Northern Virginia – one that could be located off State Road 28 just south of Dulles International Airport.

The news comes from the Washington Business Journal, which did some excellent digging.

The WBJ believes the store is in the works for 4320 Chantilly Shopping Center. That is where the Dulles Expo Center is located. It’s in the same commercial center with a Walmart, and a slew of restaurants including Hooters, Jollibee, Chick-fil-A, and a Bourbon Boulevard steakhouse.

The evidence the WBJ uncovered included an application filed with the county for an IKEA restaurant at the address, an official IKEA document that lists a store in Chantilly, and several freelance designers who list IKEA Chantilly as among their recent projects.

If a store is indeed in the works, what’s unclear is exactly what type of store it will be.

While IKEA is known for its huge warehouse style stores that can cover several hundred thousand square feet, it has also recently been opening small “plan and order” locations where you explore the store’s merchandise with an IKEA team member and then order furniture for delivery.

There are also reports of new IKEA models that fall somewhere in between – in the 40,000 s.f. to 70,000 s.f. range.
