Bad news for residents of the South Riding area of southern Loudoun County – it looks like long-gestating plans for a Lidl grocery store in the area aren’t moving forward.
The site that had been purchased and set aside for a Lidl store sits at the intersection of Gum Spring Road and Braddock Road.
It was one of many properties acquired by the German grocery chain as it made a big push into Northern Virginia. The Burn first reported on the plans on January 31, 2020.
Notice that date – just weeks before Covid 19 pandemic started to grip the nation, which impacted retailers of every shape and size.
Now, fast forward five years and the Lidl property in Loudoun is up for sale.
“The property supports a wide range of by-right retail and service uses, including restaurants, medical offices, banks, daycare centers, fitness, and personal services,” the listing from commercial broker CBRE reads. “With a maximum of floor area ratio of 62,204 SF and a 45 foot height limit, the site offers flexibility for single or multi-tenant configurations, drive-thru concepts, and destination retail.”
The news of the property being for sale was first reported by the Washington Business Journal. The WBJ reports that the Loudoun location is one of at least five properties in the market that Lidl is looking to unload rather than build upon.
The commercial center where the Lidl was supposed to go has seen several other retailers open there in recent years, including a Dunkin’ doughnuts shop, a Sheetz gas station and convenience store, and other businesses.
