Largest steeplechase event in the country returns to Virginia this month

On Saturday, October 25, when the flag drops and the announcer proclaims “They’re off!” – it will mark the 88th running of the International Gold Cup races. With more than 40,000 attendees, it’s one of the largest steeplechase events in the U.S. and one of the largest outdoor events in Virginia.

Held every fall, it is the seasonal companion to its sister race meet—the Virginia Gold Cup, held each spring. Both events take place at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia (5089 Old Tavern Road) – on beautiful, rolling fields with mountains as backdrop. The fall event is particularly picturesque with the surrounding fall foliage.

Just as with its sister race meet, it is characterized by the many elegantly dressed people surrounding lavish tailgates or enjoying tented parties; and sleek thoroughbreds racing on a lush, green field with their jockeys in colorful racing silks while the crowd cheers them on. It is one of the most colorful and picturesque events in the U.S.

And, if the sounds of pounding hooves and the roar of the crowd isn’t exciting enough, there’s also sanctioned parimutuel wagering. The International Gold Cup (fall) and the Virginia Gold Cup (spring) are the only sanctioned steeplechase races in the D.C. Metro area.

Steeplechase racing offers a fast-action sport in a refined social setting and, at the Gold Cup, some of the best horses and jockeys compete over hurdles and timber fences.

Every year, tailgates and tents get more elaborate as they vie to win the International Gold Cup Tailgate Competition. Judged by local celebrity newscasters and other VIPs, the competition is fierce and entrants go all out for the bragging rights of winning.

The International Gold Cup hat contest is equally competitive with awards given to winning entries in five categories:  Most glamorous or elegant; Funniest or Most Outrageous; Best Racing Theme; Best Child’s and Best Men’s.
