On Saturday, May 2nd, when the flag drops and the announcer proclaims “they’re off!,” it will mark the 101st running of the Virginia Gold Cup races — one of the nation’s largest (and oldest) steeplechase events and the largest in the Washington, D.C. region. With more than 30,000 attendees, it is also one of the largest outdoor events in Virginia.

Held every year on the same date as the Kentucky Derby, the Gold Cup is Virginia’s derby equivalent and is equally loved. Characterized by lavish tailgates and tented parties, sleek thoroughbreds racing around a lush, green field with their jockeys in colorful racing silks while the crowd cheers them on, it is one of the most picturesque events in the U.S.

In addition to bringing together families and friends, the event draws a large number of corporations and organizations from across the region who sponsor the event and entertain their top customers, employees and prospects.
Tailgates and tents get more elaborate each year as they vie to win the Virginia Gold Cup Tailgate Competition. Judged by local celebrity newscasters and other VIPs, the competition is fierce. Many attendees also compete in a hat contest.

Tickets, tailgate packages, boxes and tents for entertaining are available at www.vagoldcup.com. The 1922 Club tent offers a full day of luxury viewing along the south rail of the race course with food and beverage included while The Pavilion, located in the north general viewing area offers a full menu along with beer and wine.
Gates open at 10 a.m. with the National Anthem and color guard pre-race at 12:30 p.m. The tailgate contest judging begins at noon (enter online ahead of race day,) and the first of seven horse races gets underway at 1 p.m.

Held at Great Meadow in The Plains, Va. (5089 Old Tavern Road) just 45 minutes west of Washington, D.C. and 30 minutes from Dulles International Airport. Call 540-347-2612 for additional information or visit the web site at www.vagoldcup.com.
