Media outlets from around the DC market turned out to Dulles International Airport Wednesday morning for a look at how the massive Concourse E project is coming along.
Wearing hard hats and safety vests, we walked through the active construction area where the new concourse is taking shape.
As The Burn has been reporting, the new Concourse E will initially have 14 new gates when it opens to passengers sometime this fall.
The target right now is late September or early October, according to officials at the site.
Each gate will be able to park either two narrow-body aircraft serviced by a gangway or the gates can also accommodate one wide-body aircraft with two gangways extending to the plane, thus speeding up the disembarking process.
Concourse E will be serviced by the underground train the runs between the concourses at Dulles.
For arriving international passengers, they will be funneled into a separate elevated “sterile” walkway that leads to the people movers which will take them to customs.
As has been reported here, Concourse E will have a ton of new concessions including a Starbucks, a Bonchon, a Rusty Taco, an Ellie Bird restaurant, a Good Company Doughnuts & Cafe, and Loudoun’s own Honor Brewing among others.
There will also be a food court that will include a Jimmy John’s, a Wendy’s, a Dunkin’, and a Dos Toros Taqueria.
The new concourse will primarily service United flights and – as you might expect – there is a major new United Club being built as part of the project.
The new private lounge for United passengers will be roughly 40,000 s.f. and have seating for about 650 passengers making it one of the largest United Clubs in North America.
The 14 new gates coming this fall is just the start for Concourse E. Further expansion of the concourse is planned for the future with an additional 20+ gates.
