Huge Savers thrift store in the works for Loudoun

A national thrift store chain is working on its first Loudoun County location. It’s officially named Savers Value Village, but it’s most commonly just called Savers in this region.

According to documents filed with the county, Savers is planning on opening a new location in the Sugarland Crossing shopping center in Sterling.

That’s the retail plaza off Route 7 that is also home to a Burlington store and a Lidl supermarket.

Savers is looking to move into the 35,000 s.f. space that was left vacant when Joann Fabrics closed all its stores nationally last year.

Savers is a national for-profit thrift store brand. If we understand the process correctly, people can donate goods to Savers on behalf of local non-profits. Savers then pays these partner non-profits for the donations and resells the items in their stores.

“Over the past five years, Savers has paid approximately $534 million to these partners for donated goods,” the paperwork filed with the county reads. “During the same period, the company helped divert more than 3.6 billion pounds of material from the waste stream.”

There are scores of locations operating under a variety of names across the United States and Canada. Here in Northern Virginia, there are Savers stores in Fairfax, Falls Church, and elsewhere.

Right now, Savers is seeking permission from Loudoun officials to make some changes to the front and rear of the space at Sugarland Crossing.

No word yet when the store might actually open, so stay tuned for future updates.
