After some unanticipated delays, the team at the upcoming GiGi Urbano Italian Kitchen say they are “starting to see the finish line.”
As The Burn first reported back in April, GiGi Urbano is opening in the Woodland Park Crossing shopping center in Herndon.
It’s the latest brainchild of Tisha and Bill Downes, the owners of the much-loved URBANO Modern Italian restaurant in Sterling, located in the Cascades Overlook Town Center off Benedict Drive.
We reached out to the Downes and they tell us – if all goes smoothly from here out – they are hoping to be ready to open sometime in October.
The new restaurant has a fun family history. The original Urbanos were Italian immigrants who came to the United States circa 1907.
They settled in the Trenton, New Jersey area and opened Freddie’s Tavern, an iconic restaurant that was in business for 86 years before closing in 2019.

The Downes, who are part of the Urbano family, have named their new establishment GiGi Urbano in honor of their great-grandmother (GiGi) and her meatball sub sandwich that started it all.
The new restaurant will specialize in gourmet Italian-style sandwiches.
